The NC Dept. of Transportation will be closing one lane of the Morehead City bridge to perform concrete repairs from 9 am to 11 am tomorrow, Nov. 8.
Traffic will alternate directions, and drivers should expect delays.
Portions of the bridge have experienced “spalling,” according to an NC DOT engineer. In other words, concrete has fallen off in some places, exposing the rebar underneath. When exposed to weather and salt spray, the rebar will deteriorate more quickly. The damage poses no structural threat to the bridge.
The work was started Thursday around 9 am, causing significant delays. At 11 am, westbound traffic was backed up to the intersection of highways 70 and 101 with delays exceeding 30 minutes for some drivers. Eastbound traffic was backed up past 6th Street in Morehead.
Drivers can follow real-time traffic conditions via the NCDOT travel information map.
