Turner Street Speed Limit

The owners of The Inn on Turner and a resident who lives at the intersection of Turner and Pine streets have requested that the town lower the Turner Street speed limit to 25 mph. Currently the speed limit is 35 mph between Highway 70 and Ann Street. Town staff recommended lowering the speed limit last year.

“We see DAILY cars flying down Turner Street WELL beyond the 25 mph stated speed limit. This is a danger to our neighborhood residents as we walk and bike, those visiting our town as they explore unfamiliar streets and those attending court each day at the courthouse. We have numerous church based childcare and preschools that walk Beaufort’s youngest daily crossing Turner Street at numerous corners,” stated an email sent by Kim Bell and Jon Hass, owners of the inn.

Kim Bell and Jon Hass, the owners of the inn, have also requested that speed calming strips be added.

Compass Hotel Project

The Board will receive information about the Compass Hotel project and the Planning Board’s 3-2 vote to approve the site plans with two conditions and four recommendations (large file). The project legally meets the current Land Development Ordinance. One part of the project is within the Historic District and still must go before the Historic Planning Commission. The HPC’s next meeting is Tuesday, Nov. 5, and Compass is not on the agenda.
