DEQ Closes Rachel Carson Reserve Effective April 3


The NC Dept. of Environmental Quality is closing three coastal reserve sites, including the Rachel Carson Reserve on Carrot Island, Bird Shoal and Middle Marsh as of 7:30 pm today, April 3 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Closures specifically apply to the land, which includes wet/dry beaches and uplands. Waters remain open for visitors to navigate through and use for recreational activities so long as social distancing and gathering restrictions are followed.

The closure includes all land and wet/dry beach areas within the red circle on the map below.

All of Rachel Carson Reserve will be closed to the public beginning 7:30 pm April 3.
