A boozy, homegrown version of television favorite “Chopped” is coming to The Beaufort Hotel tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 15.
During the event, billed as the first Carteret Craft Brewers Battle at the Cut, five county breweries will face off to create the best brews possible out of unusual ingredients.
The five Carteret County breweries include:
- Crystal Coast Brewing of Atlantic Beach
- Fishtowne Brew House of Beaufort
- Mill Whistle Brewing of Beaufort
- Shortway Brewing of Newport
- Tight Lines Pub & Brewing of Morehead City
The competition has several stages: initial voting through early Wednesday evening, the “Chopped-esque” ingredient selection at 7 pm Wednesday, a several week brewing period, then a tasting event and professional judging March 7.
At the first of the year, each brewery chose one beer to showcase at 34° North, the hotel’s restaurant and bar. Whichever brewery sells the most pints before 7 pm tomorrow evening will be able to choose the first ingredient. The public is invited to come out, enjoy some pints and watch the ingredient selection.
“Our chefs from 34° North Restaurant will select the local ingredients that the brew masters will have to use to create their beer,” Peter Grills, general manager of the Beaufort Hotel, said.
“The beer festival is a great way for people in Carteret County to support our local breweries.”
The real competition starts when the brewers begin to create the own beer using the ingredient selected. After weeks of brewing, the five breweries will get together for a beer festival to unveil their new brews. The festival takes place on Saturday, March 7, from 2 – 6 pm.
Free beer samples, live music, and food trucks will be available.
The breweries will compete for a “People’s Choice Award” where guests will vote for their favorite beer with a $1 per vote donation that will go to Loaves & Fishes of Beaufort.
The event is free and will take place on the grounds of the Beaufort Hotel at 2440 Lennoxville Road in Beaufort.
Special room rates will be available at the Beaufort Hotel for those attending the event.
