Cape Lookout Superintendent: No Gatherings of More Than 10

Boats lined up on Shackleford Banks Saturday, March 28, 2020.

In response to a weekend that saw the shores of the Cape and Shackleford banks lined with boaters – many of whom were gathering in large numbers – Superintendent Jeff West is cracking down on seemingly ignored social distancing recommendations.

“In support of policy to limit the spread of the Covid-19 virus, Under 36 CFR section 1.5 a (1), I am limiting any groups of the public that might gather together to 10 or less, effective immediately. This is a direct result of observed groups gathering at Wade Shores and the Cape who are coming in by private boat.”

The park closed down its facilities and restrooms last week due to COVID-19 concerns, but left the beaches open for the public.

Carteret County announced at 5 pm today, March 30, that short term rentals were prohibited effective immediately. The move, county commissioner said, is to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
