Beaufort Garden Club Celebrates 60th Diamond Anniversary
The Beaufort Garden Club celebrated its 60th Anniversary at its meeting on January 9. Beaufort Mayor Rett Newton and one of the club’s founding members, Jean Chappell, were special guests at the celebration. Mrs. Chappell and 14 friends formed the Beaufort Garden Club in 1959.
The more than 80 members and guests attending enjoyed an entertaining video that included past and present photographs paired with some lively oldies. The video highlighted the many contributions the club has made to Beaufort.
The Beaufort Garden club manages spring planting and maintenance of the flowers and pots throughout town. They make natural wreaths in December for the Beaufort Historic Site Buildings and create lovely flower arrangements in June for the BHA Old Homes Tour.
During the past 60 years, the club has also completed many special projects of the Beautification committee, including the 1966 Highway Beautification project, landscaping the Boys & Girls Club, cleaning up the Old Town Library Building on Turner Street, and planting pots at the Beaufort Branch of the Carteret County Library.
The club holds many popular fundraising activities to support their projects, including 20 plus years participating in an annual Jumble sale, holding live and silent auctions, Holiday Home Tours in the 1960s and even a Fashion Show in 1995.
No one can mistake the fun and comradery of these women who share the love for our community and commitment to beautification of Beaufort. You see their work in the roses on the boardwalk, at Town Hall, at the Library, at the Boys and Girls Club, and in a multitude of pots planted throughout town in the spring.
The 60th anniversary was marked by a spiffy new club logo. Bonnie Bobetsky and her daughter, Shauna Seaver, based their design on the club’s flower, the magnolia, and the colors greens and white selected in the 1960s. The current officers voted to add our “Beaufort fence” and aqua background to complete the look.
Special guests were past Presidents and Lifetime members Martha Barnes and Pat Castagna, past Presidents Cheryl Young, Beverly Glover-Wood, Katherine Bland and Deborah Van Dyken, and Lifetime members Paula Stancil, Anne Eastman, Sonny Newton, and Anna Willis.
The Beaufort Garden Club will meet at 10 am Thursday, Feb. 6 at Ann Street UMC’s Eure Building, 500 Ann St. Refreshments will be served from 9:30 to 10 am.
February’s program on pruning will be presented by Robert Webb, owner of LawnMaster Landscape Contractors. Mr. Webb will be joined by Nathan Beasley, Lead Horticulture Instructor, Carteret Community College.
